Statutory Sick Pay expanded as 'Test and Trace' system is launched

Insights / / Bristol

Statutory Sick Pay entitlement has been expanded today; the same day as the new “Test and Trace” system begins in England.

From today, individuals who have been notified that they have had contact with a person with Coronavirus, and who are therefore self-isolating at home for 14 days, will be deemed incapable of work and entitled to Statutory Sick Pay from day one of their period of isolation.

This change comes after the SSP regime was expanded on 13 March 2020, which entitled people with symptoms of Coronavirus and who were required to self-isolate, and for people who are shielding because they are extremely vulnerable, to SSP from day one.

Businesses with less than 250 employees are able to re-claim SSP paid in respect of the 14 days for the Coronavirus related absence.
