Our Senior Immigration Consultant, Marta Mendiondo, spoke to ABC, one of Spain’s biggest selling newspapers, regarding the deadline of the EU Settlement Scheme.

“There has been an avalanche” of workers, mainly from the financial sector, who used to live in the United Kingdom and did not realise until the very last minute that their historical residence made them eligible to apply to the Settlement Scheme.
“Many are applying because of their own children, who will have the opportunity to live, study and work (visa free) in the UK in the future”.
She also underlined the urgency for families to apply for their minor children living in the country, even those born in the UK, who have not automatically become British at birth.
Later in the article, Marta explains that there are a number of problems at the moment, now that the deadline has passed:
On one hand “people leaving it to the last minute”, which made both the web and the app crash. On the other hand, that “the British government did not extend the deadline” despite the requests from a number of organisations and the Labour party.
Finally, in the specific case of Spanish citizens, that the diplomatic authorities, especially the Spanish consulate in London, “can’t cope with the new document issuance”, despite the increase in their staff numbers in the last months.
The Labour party asked for a three-month extension of the scheme to Boris Johnson’s government, due to the process delays and the pandemic, but the request was refused.

En el artículo, en español, Marta comentó que en los últimos días previos al 1 de julio, se había producido una auténtica avalancha de trabajadores, sobre todo del mundo de las finanzas, que vivieron en el pasado en el Reino Unido y que hasta el último momento no se enteraron de que sus años de residencia anterior les daba derecho a aplicar al programa de asentamiento. Muchos lo están haciendo por sus hijos, que tendrán, por ejemplo, la oportunidad de venir a estudiar y trabajar en el futuro sin visado.
Marta también explico que urge que las familias sepan que debe hacerse el tramite también para los menores de edad que viven actualmente en el país, incluso los que han nacido en él y que no obtienen la nacionalidad de forma automática.
Mendiondo también expuso que había varios problemas en ese momento, una vez cerrado el plazo: por un lado, que mucha gente lo ha dejado para última hora, lo que provoco que la app y la web terminaran cayéndose: por otro, que el gobierno británico no extendió el plazo, y finalmente, en el caso específico de los ciudadanos españoles, que las autoridades diplomáticas, sobre todo el consulado de Londres, no dan abasto para emitir documentación pese al refuerzo de personal de los últimos meses.
